$149.99

SMALL ( about 4\" tall to TOP of LID ) HALF PINT size, wonderfully deep SUN COLORED AMETHYST (SCA) antique Fruit Jar.This is NOT a reproduction but a 100 year old genuine antique canning jar. This is the next to impossible HALF 1/2 PINT size of this jar. Not only is it hard enough to find this jar in this small half pint, it is virtually impossible to find one that is old enough to turn this deep purple color. Whether there is sunlight streaming through the jar in a picture window or artificial light beaming through the jar as you hold it up, you will be WOWED by the RICH PURPLE color of this jar, it looks like a PURPLE POPSICLE as it gleams in the light!

  • Jar lid is embossed: \"A. G. SMALLEY & CO. / BOSTON & NEW YORK\".

  • Base of jar embossed: \"A. G. SMALLEY & CO. / PATENTED APRIL 1896 / BOSTON & NEW YORK\".

  • Condition: Jar is in NICE CLEAN condition. It has some wear/discoloring where wire contacts glass and where top of lip was ground in manufacturing, nothing significant. NO cracks, chips, dings, damage, etc.

  • Age: An early hand-blown jar (Blown-In-Mold = BIM) with a ground-top, ca. late 1800\'s.

  • Shipping: All DOMESTIC shipping charges INCLUDE insurance. We have enjoyed shipping our items all over the world and are happy to offer most of our items to international buyers. Yet insuring International parcels is very expensive so PLEASE NOTE; we do NOT insure International orders unless winning buyer specifically requests this and we are able to provide an insurance quote. We do not falsify information on the Customs Form, such as a price other than what the actual purchase price is, so please do not request us to do so. We ship several times a week and send payment acknowledgments and shipping confirmations. Your prompt payment will assure a very quick turn-around time. IMPORTANT NOTE: If our shipping charge is much more than the actual shipping cost, we will refund the excess so what YOU pay for shipping/insurance is very close to, if not exactly, the ACTUAL shipping costs! This is especially important for foreign buyers to know as most of our foreign shipping charges are rough estimates.

It is very, very difficult to find a HALF PINT fruit jar that is old enough to turn purple let alone one that is this deep purple color. You hear about antique glass turning purple from the sun (sun colored amethyst = SCA) in general terms, here is how it works: The purple color is the result of having manganese in the glass. Manganese is a mineral, a rock, that was mined, crushed, and pulverized into a powder, then added to vats of molten liquid glass, and acted as a decolorizing agent to turn the natural aqua-tinted glass into a pure crystal clear colorless glass. But when exposed to the ultraviolet rays of the sun or other sources of UV rays, it triggers a chemical reaction and the manganese oxidizes and turns a wonderful amethyst color. We had a friend of ours accelerate the sun color purple process by running this jar through an industrial food sterilizer which has the same affect as the sun, but a lot faster. It really isn’t whether a bottle or jar has turned purple by the sun or UV rays in a controlled Environment, they all turn the same purple color as it is the same chemical reaction taking place. But more importantly is the jar itself, such as this one, it has to be a true antique jar with manganese in the glass, to even turn this purple color. With few exceptions, only glass blown before 1914 has manganese in it and will turn sun-colored-amethyst. So a jar has to be old enough and had to be blown with manganese in the glass, in order to turn purple. But it\'s all worth it, not only does this deep purple/amethyst color make this a great looking antique FRUIT jar, but it also authenticates it as being truly antique. This jar is functional as well as it still has the wire bale and glass lid that work. It can be used as a storage jar on a kitchen counter for sugar, dried peas, rice, coffee beans, dried fruit, honey ... and anything stored in this jar would be enough to really spruce-up a kitchen counter. Anyway ... not bad for a century old glass jar AND again, SUPER RARE in this small 1/2 pint sized jar, check it out!
