This is a Vintage Old English Staffordshire Ware Transferware plate in Blue and White, with a wide floral border around the edge of the plate. The center of the plate features a view of HOOVER DAM. It is named one of the Top 10 Construction Achievements of the 20th Century and it continues to draw crowds more than 70 years after its creation. It attracts more than a million visitors a year, and it is located in Black Canyon, just minutes outside of Las Vegas, Nevada on the border with the state of Arizona. The dam has been called Boulder Canyon Dam as well as Boulder Dam, but Hoover Dam was reinstated as the official name by Congress in 1947.
The plate measures about 10\" in diameter across the top. It has a backstamp showing it was made by the Adams Pottery in England, see picture(s). Adams supplied Jon Roth with wares until 1966. Of interest is that this plate was originally made for and sold by SMITH & CHANDLER - INDIAN TRADERS - WITH LOCATIONS IN WEST YELLOWSTONE, MONTANA AND IN LAS VEGAS, NEVADA. These stores are considered to be high end souvenir stores famous for having only the best quality of goods.
The plate is in very fine condition and there are no chips, cracks or repairs. The tiny dark mark visible in the scans in the center of the dam face, is an imperfection in the clay used to make the plate, AND IT IS UNDER THE GLAZE.
Overall the plate is in very good, used as-found condition. The scuffing from normal wear to the glaze is very minimal as shown. Please view the pictures and decide the condition & value of this truly antique flow blue & white plate for yourself.
