SOLID SILVER VESTA CASE 1896 by Deakin & Francis:

This sale is for a Sterling Silver Vesta Case hallmarkedin Birmingham in 1896.

It is approximately 41mm high and 34mm wide and it weighs 18grams on my postal scales.

The top is hinged and sprung, the spring still has a bit of‘snap’ in it and the top closes quite neatly with a tiny push for the last bit,there is a striker in the base and a hanging loop and fob ring on one side. Thecase is plain polished silver and there is very little by way of scratches, theback of the body is curved to sit comfortably in a pocket, while there are nodents or splits there are a few little dings and surface marks from use. Theinside is nice and clean and has a gilded finish.

The hallmarks are clear and read; maker D&F for Deakin& Francis, Lion Passant for Sterling Silver, date letter ‘w’ for 1896 andthe Anchor for Birmingham Assay Office, inside the top is marked with the Lionand the ‘w’.
