Description Season 1-6:

Sons of Anarchy: Season One

The roar of a motorcycle can signal freedom--or trouble. Sons of Anarchy examines a biker gang from both perspectives, as Jackson \"Jax\" Teller (Charlie Hunnam, Nicholas Nickleby) struggles between loyalty to the Sons of Anarchy Motorcycle Club, Redwood Originals (aka SAMCRO or \"Sam Crow,\" which his dead father founded) and doubts about the criminal and often brutal actions the club demands of him. The series opens with a rival gang stealing the Sons\' stash of guns and the premature birth of Jax\'s son, two events that sow questions in Jax\'s mind about the life he\'s leading. Over the course of the season, these questions will spark dangerous conflict with the gang\'s leader, Clay Morrow (Ron Perlman, Hellboy) and with his own mother, Gemma (Katey Sagal, Married with Children), who\'s now married to Clay. Despite the macho setting, Gemma is the standout character of the first season of Sons of Anarchy: fierce and manipulative, she sets the good of the club (and her own desires) above everything else--even her love for her son. Despite the lingering presence of his junkie ex-wife (Drea de Matteo, The Sopranos), Jax finds himself drawn to his high school sweetheart, Tara Knowles (Maggie Siff, Mad Men), now a doctor, and who saved his son\'s life.
Throughout the first season of Sons of Anarchy, SAMCRO grapples with a multicultural array of foes: Hispanic bikers, African-American gangbangers, white supremacists, an Asian triad, and agents of the ATF. Uneasy alliances and precarious compromises rarely work out as planned, leading to nail-biting confrontations and headaches for Jax. But the rituals and emotional bonds of the club itself are the real subject of the show--how an institution built on friendship and family loyalty gets twisted by ambition and greed. One particularly compelling story line follows Jax and his best friend, Opie (Ryan Hurst, Remember the Titans), who had stepped away from the gang to make peace with his wife; to help Jax, he reenters the biker life, with horrific consequences. The creator of Sons of Anarchy, Kurt Sutter, was a writer and actor on The Shield, and fans of that show will find a similarly compelling mixture of scheming machinations and compromised morality here, grounded in excellent performances and vivid production

Sons of Anarchy: Season Two

Get your motor running and head out on the highway for the heavy metal thunder of the Sons of Anarchy, the biker gang--er, motorcycle club, or MC--from Charming, California, whose members rank among television\'s more unlikely heroes. Fans of the FX series already know that the Sons of Anarchy Motorcycle Club, Redwood Original Chapter (better known as SAMCRO, or simply Sam Crow), are a fairly unsavory bunch engaged in any number of criminal activities; the fact that they specialize in illegal gun running doesn\'t stop them from also dabbling in pornography, drugs, murder, assault, and various other nefarious pursuits, all of which are on display throughout the 13 episodes (on three discs, plus bonus features) comprising this second season. But that sort of thing didn\'t stop anyone from caring about the gangsters in The Godfather, and while no one is suggesting that creator Kurt Sutter\'s show is on that level (then again, what is?), he too has imbued his characters with enough individual nuance, along with a consistent moral code, to make for very compelling viewing.
As the season opens, the MC is still reeling from the death of member Opie Winston\'s wife, which we and everyone except Opie (Ryan Hurst) himself knows was the Sons\' own doing--a fact that President Clay Morrow (Ron Perlman) is at pains to conceal from him. That in turn puts Clay at odds with his son-in-law, Vice President Jax Teller (Brad Pitt look-alike Charlie Hunnam); this conflict becomes one of season 2\'s major ongoing themes, as Jax is torn between his loyalty to his \"brothers\" and a nagging conscience that keeps pushing him toward the straight and narrow (like Michael Corleone, Jax finds that his promise to his \"civilian\" girlfriend, a doctor played by Maggie Siff, to make the Sons legit is easier made than kept). Elsewhere, the MC must contend with the arrival of the League of American Nationalists (LOAN), a white separatist group headed by Ethan Zobelle (Adam Arkin) and his menacing enforcer (a well-cast Henry Rollins), who intend to run SAMCRO out of Charming; their brutal assault in the first episode on Gemma (Katey Sagal, who once again turns in perhaps the show\'s strongest performance), Jax\'s mother and Clay\'s wife, is part of the season\'s other principal story line.
As before, the Sons also grapple with a variety of other bikers and criminal groups, not to mention the frequent attention of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms. Sons of Anarchy doesn\'t exactly glorify these violent, misogynist, debauched guys, but it does remind us while they are criminals, they\'re also people with spouses, children, health problems, jobs (sort of), and other quotidian concerns--not like us, to say the least, but worthy of our attention. Bonus material includes a brief but well-done behind-the-scenes featurette and a \"roundtable discussion\" in which the cast answers questions submitted by viewers

Sons of Anarchy: Season Four

It may seem surprising that a TV series about an outlaw motorcycle gang--er, club--should have such staying power, but as this fourth season of Sons of Anarchy (with 13 episodes, including a two-parter, plus bonus material, on three discs) makes clearer than ever, this show is about more than biker dudes and their \"old ladies.\" Indeed, there\'s an almost Shakespearean display of human values here, like loyalty and honor (and their dark opposites), and the importance of family. They are all put to the test this season, as Clay Morrow (Ron Perlman), his wife Gemma (Katey Sagal), Gemma\'s son Jax (Charlie Hunnam), and the rest of the members of SAMCRO face numerous challenges.

As the season starts, several members are released from prison, only to find that there\'s a new lawman in charge of Charming, the club\'s fictional California town, and he\'s a lot less accommodating than his predecessor; there\'s also a sneaky US attorney who plants a snitch among the Sons and is determined to take them and their various criminal associates down once and for all. Under Clay\'s less-than-honest leadership, the club also gets involved with a ruthless Mexican drug cartel and its leader (Danny Trejo, a former bad guy in real life whose face alone would be enough to scare most people straight), a move that goes against their core principles; like the Corleone family in The Godfather, they swore to never get involved in drug dealing (however, acting as cocaine mules for their new partners is apparently just fine). And there are numerous ongoing personal matters, including Jax\'s desire to quit and lead a normal life with his kids and spouse Tara (Maggie Siff), a doctor who\'s not a bit sure that the life of an old lady suits her, and a major storyline involving Clay\'s possible role in the death of John Teller, Jax\'s father and Gemma\'s first husband. Secrets are kept, lies are told, many are killed, wonderful music is heard (Dylan\'s \"The Times They Are a-Changin\'\" in Spanish? Why not?)…. All in all, there\'s a lot going on, but series creator Kurt Sutter, who also plays the role of Otto, manages to keep a firm grip on the handlebars throughout.
