A stunning silvernovelty owl propelling pencil by S. Mordan & Co, it has a very smoothaction when pulling the ring on the top revealing the propelling pencil at theowls feet. It measures 35mm when closed and nearly doubles when extended to apencil to 60mm. It shows little sign of wear and is in excellent condition butmissing the end which can be sourced or swooped with a similar leadholder. The propelling mechanism workswell, please see photos. A rare piece to find in this condition and a wonderfulpiece of jewellery which could be worn on a necklace today. It weighs approx12grams

SampsonMordan, Snr was born in 1790 and patented his ever-pointed propelling pencil on20th December 1822. He entered his first silver mark on 20th June 1823 andanother with his partner Gabriel Riddle on 30th April 1824. Mordan and Riddlehad their premises at 22 Castle Street, City Rd.,where S. Mordan & Co werefirst listed as \"patent ever-pointed pencil and portable penmanufacturers. After the fathers death in 1843 his two sons continued thebuisenss excelling in quality silver and gold items many novelties and otherexquisite items suppling silver articles to retailers including Asprey &Sons, The Goldsmiths & SilversmithsCo. Ltd, Leuchars, Thornhill etc.
