Theyear 1896 was an important election year, and the issue ofbimetallism, i.e., the use of both gold and silver as the base of thecurrency system, was a major issue. The Speech of the Hon. CarlSchurz delivered at Central Music Hall, September 5, 1896, under theauspices of The American Honest Money League, Chicago, Ill is oneexample of the effort to gain support for one side of the issue.

Thespeech is contained in a 24 page booklet, without covers, thatmeasures approximately 5 ¾ x 8 ¾ inches. The pages are tanned, butthe text is clear and easily read. There is staining and chipping ofthe pages, primarily on the binding edge. The first and last pagesare detached, and several other pages are semi-detached. The picturesabove show the booklet’s title page, the “Platform of TheAmerican Honest Money League”, and the first and last pages ofthe speech. The item is a first edition, as printed in 1896. It isnot a modern reprint or scanned copy of an original.

CarlSchurz (March 2, 1829 – May 14, 1906) was a Germanrevolutionary, American statesman and reformer, and Union ArmyGeneral in the American Civil War. He was also an accomplishedjournalist, newspaper editor and orator, who in 1869 became the firstGerman-born American elected to the United States Senate. [Wikipedia]
