Offered in this sale is a superb American handmade sterling silverbowl by Joel F Hewes of Titusville, Pennsylvania made around 1915. Hewes worked in very thick gauge sterling silver and is characterized by very fine hand-hammered surfaces.Joel F. Hewes is listed inThe Society of Arts and Crafts, Boston Exhibition Record 1897-1927.Hewes is listed as a silversmith and metalworker and earned a Master Craftsmanmembership of the Boston Society of Arts & Crafts in 1928. He is listed asworking from 1908-27 in Titusville, Pennsylvania.Hewes\' heavy-duty work is very rare to find today and are thegold standard of American Arts & Crafts handmade sterling silver.
This bowl is very rare as it is companion stamped with the anchor symbol of Hewes\' apprentice, Jonathan Locke.
Being over 100 years old, the piece is in excellent condition. It would polish up beautifully, but I will leave that to the winning buyer. Please take a look at the pictures.
