Offered for sale: This plate took me by surprise. I had never heard of \"Empire China,\" and after a long bit of searching, I finally found it in Lehner\'s Encyclopedia of US Marks. It was an early 20th Century mark used by Steubenville Pottery (in business 1879-1959). Lehner dates this particular mark to wares made around 1915.
This lovely plate has a very ornate shape, with embossed pink rim and ribs, with gold garlands, which fades to a light golden yellow near the center, where a lovely decal decoration shows a young woman and youth--I assume this represents Venus and Cupid, or some similar tale. They are surrounded by flowers, and the ring around the center has gold filigree.
The large plate measures 10.5 inches across the widest part of the rim. It is in good condition, with no chips or cracks. But there are a lot of utensil marks (I suspect it was used as a cake plate), and significant wear to the gold decoration, particularly around the center. There are no deep gouges or scratches, and the gold trim on the outer rim is fairly intact (as is the pink border). There are no chips or cracks, but the back side shows faint overall crazing.
The plate has a clear gold mark for \"Empire China\" in a gold wreath with crown.
