This piece measures 5 x 5 x 5/16, is17 sq. in. and 11.2 oz.The colors shades of brown, cream, and tan.the grain is plainly visiblein many areas ofthe piece. This piece also fractured and then resealed as shown by the off-set patterns. This is a very solid specimen. There is one area that the grain did not totally fill with silica which can be seen on the left side of the first photo just at and below center level in the cream colored area. It is very small and difficult to see.

This petrified wood comes fromRogers Mountain near Scio, Oregon. The material first exposed on thehillsideand was easy to dig butsince it runs in a level layer thedigging became deeper as you moved further into the hill.My family starteddigging there in the late 60\'s and dug our last hole I believe in the late 80\'sat 17 feet deep. We thought that was far enough. The location is now closed todigging due to vandalism and danger, (the last hole I looked into was 23 feetdeep, 25 feet wideand had trees leaning over it). The really neat thingabout digging there was that when you hit the layer of petrified wood you weregenerally really in it. It was in a blue-green clay layer and the pieces werepacked together, sometimes so tightly that you couldn’t get your pick behindone because another one blocked the way. Oh darn! It is true that there weremany pieces that were pretty small but they all had great agate in them.

The material from thislocation has a generally smooth exterior from being tumbled and washed in asdrift wood would be. Generally the pieces come out of the ground wellsmoothedbut some have had pieces broken off. Mother Earth can be rough attimes!

When I started working side byside with my dad on rocks he taught me that if you are going to do a job, do itto the very best of your ability. Consequently, all the specimens that weworked on have beautiful finishes that are seldom captured in photos. I havebeen told that we spend too much time on a finish that would not beappreciatedby the general public, but only by serious collectors or museums. That may beso but my philosophy is the same as dads, give the buyer or friend the verybest. This is what we do.

You will not bedisappointed if you are the lucky purchaser of this specimen.

As always, please examine thespecimen closely and contact me with any questions that you have before offerdingor buying.
