First of all let me tell you that I am not in any fashion an expert on gemstones and especially diamonds. This button is an exquisite scarce button set with genuine 8 rose cut diamonds weighing approximately 2 ct total weight. The button was made in the 18th or early 19th century as determined by the type of diamonds in the setting.The Georgian period is identified as 1714-1830. The diamond carat weight was estimated in the button. An exact total weight could not be determined unless the diamonds were removed. Needless to say I was more than reluctant to have the button destroyed in an effort to have an exact carat weight determined. Each stone is Gypsy set in silver. The prong looking crimps are simply decorative. The do not add stability to the setting. What appears to be a twisted rope around the central diamond and the border of the button is actually hand chasing made to imitate a rope. It is in very fine condition. The diamonds measure approximately 2 mm in diameter. The button itself measures 1/2 inch in diameter. It has a silver loop shank with a bar over the base so the shank would never detach from the button. An early jewelry safety system similar to safety chains on valuable jewelry of a later date. The shank is slightly bent. I did not attempt to straighten it. Nor did I clean the button. I leave that decision to the new owner.
