Stunning 1920s Cobalt Blue Silk Velvet Art Deco Opera Coat with Fan Ties Sz M

An all original and absolutely stunning 1920s cobalt blue silk velvet opera coat. This iconic art deco opera coat is made of the most luscious thick silk velvet I have ever felt, with unusual leg-o\'-mutton sleeves that drape over the elbow and a spectacular tie front with two wonderful \"fan\" tails of cobalt velvet that drape down the front or dramatically over the shoulder. The sleeves are just a little longer than 3/4 and the end of the sleeve is pointed on the outside, and the coat is meant to be worn with 3/4 length gloves (cream satin gloves would be perfect!). The buttery soft fabric is so soft and it drapes so beautifully, and it catches the light in the folds - so classy. The coat fastens with only one large self covered button where the neckline crosses over in the front, and as you walk the coat reveals the beautiful cream silk satin inside, which lines the whole coat. And who says the French had the monopoly on art deco? This coat has a label that shows it was quality made in the USA - the label says \"Pogue, Cinncinnati\". The measurements (approximate) are:

  • bust (pit to pit) 40\"
  • natural hips 42\"
  • sweep of the hem 60\"
  • shoulder to hem 38\"
  • shoulder to shoulder across the back 14\"
  • length of sleeves pit to cuff (at the longest point) 15\"
  • ties at the neck 16\" long x 13\" at the widest

The measurements of this coat are generous and are approximately equivalent to a US size M as this style is meant to be worn loose. The coat is displayed on my size 6 model, and is quite loose on her, but still looks great, so this coat could be worn by someone size S equally well. The cobalt velvet has no holes or deterioration in the silk that I could find, no rubbed areas on the velvet, no underarm discoloration, no stains, no fading - it is clean and has been recently dry cleaned by the previous owner. The cobalt color is vibrant. Note that in some of the photos, the light reflects off the velvet so brightly as to leave white squares or lines of reflection - these are not rubbed areas or any kind of damage. Unfortunately, the main condition issue is the cream silk satin lining, which is starting to deteriorate. It is strong and beautiful from the arms down, but the shoulders and arms are starting to shatter and there are numerous splits in this area (shown). The coat has a beige linen interlining that is stitched right into the velvet seams, so you could remove the silk lining and just wear it with the linen lining. I think that the quality and condition of the velvet would make it worthwhile relining with cream silk satin, but it could be worn as is with the original lining removed and with only the beige linen interlining inside. There may be other minor signs of wear consistent with age. Relined or not, the coat would be perfect for your 1920s themed event, or to the opera or symphony. Incredibly classy, and as relevant today as when it was made in the 1920s. This is NOT a reproduction, this is an original 1920s cobalt blue silk velvet art deco era opera coat.

If you are looking for new and perfect, then vintage is probably not for you. In most cases, vintage clothing has been worn and that is why it is such a good bargain. Excellent vintage condition rarely means new - do not expect perfect as there will often be some signs of wear. Some of the garments we sell are 75 years old or more, and even if they were never worn, the fabric may show signs of wear just from being stored in a trunk all those years. However, vintage is a great way to dress extravagantly without having an extravagant budget. You can often find extraordinary examples of antique, vintage or designer items that are wearable textile art and will make you look like a million bucks.
