What is there tosay, really? That many seasonedcollectors consider this the most iconic radio ever made? That it’s certainly one of the most visuallystriking tabletop radios ever produced?That it was a technological marvel when introduced in 1938 – withfeatures like motorized tuning and Zenith’s legendary “robot dial” – and stillis, nearly 80 years later? Or simplythat this is one of the most prized antique radios there is? All of it – and so much more – is true. Because this is the legendary Zenith model9-S-232, known commonly as the “Waltons” set because it was featured on thatclassic 1970’s TV show, set in Appalachia during the Great Depression. It would be famous anyway – just look at it.
I bought thisset in Philadelphia many years ago from the son of the original owner, and hadits electronics expertly restored. Sincethen, I’ve listened to it nearly every day, and the 9-tube chassis is QUITE aperformer; after sundown, the broadcast band pulls in stations from all overthe Eastern half of the U.S. and Canada, and the main shortwave band pulls themin from all over the word. As you cansee, the dial face for the Broadcast band is stationized, and it’s been a realtreat to learn how many stations are still operating at the same frequencynearly 80 years later. The tuning eye isbright and clear; the dial lights all work perfectly, too. The motorized tuning exhibits absolutely nolag or sluggishness. The tone controlsare precise and effective; this is a set that can rattle the windows withabsolutely no distortion. The cabinet isin excellent condition, as you can see; the book-matched veneer on it isgorgeous. The grille cloth is a precisereproduction, and the knobs are all original.This is a big set – 23”h x 18”w x 13”d – and instantly commands yourattention wherever it is displayed. It’soccupied a place of honor in my living room for a long time; as I said, I’velistened to it almost every day, and it has never failed or faltered. Now, though, I’m running out of space, soit’s time to pass it along to another discerning collector.
