This beautiful cross monstrance / reliquary was designed to contain the relics of the saints or other sacred objects. A monstrance is the sacred vessel which contains the consecrated Eucharistic Host during Mass or Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament.
Monstrances may be designed to be carried by a priest or set on a thabor table when not being transported.Relics can be parts of the bodies of the saints, something they used, or objects that have been touched to their bodies. Scripture attests to the healing power of objects touched to Jesus or His apostles. Christian belief believed the body of the saint provided a spiritual link between life and death, between man and God so these reliquaries were more than mementos, they were containers that stored and displayed relics and constituted a major form of artistic production across Europe and Byzantium throughout the middle ages. They were sometimes created expressly for privileged individuals.
