$602.26

This is a fabulous ancient Roman mustard yellow jasper intaglio, dating to the Antonine period of the 2nd century A.D. The intaglio is cut with a representation of a modius, scales and ears of wheat. The modius was an ancient Roman unit for Dry measures for wheat, grain and barley, (8.73 l roughly equivalent to a peck). The scales for weighing the said measures of grain, together thissymbolwould refer to a merchant or an \'Aedile\' at theCura Annonae(who doled out the annual grain supplies within Rome). Such an intaglio may have once been owned by one of the officials working on behalf of the emperor, as a seal and signature of his duty. Today the intaglio has survived in perfect condition, with a minuscule chip to the edge that one expects on ancient gems. This intaglio can be either remounted into a gold signet ring or added to a prestigious gem collection.
