This is a rare and beautifully made ancient Roman silver intaglio ring, dating to the 3rd century AD. It has a simple dark red sard intaglio, cut with a pair of clasped hands. During the 3rd - 4th century AD, intaglio engraving had degraded in style and quality from earlier pieces. The quality of the ring however, makes up for the intaglio by its sheer quality of design and skill. The technique involved in producing this rings was called \"opus interrasile\", it can be found on Roman jewellery from the 3rd century AD, well into the Byzantine period. It involved cutting the openwork design with tiny chisels, one mistake and the piece was ruined. So to have made this ring would require a goldsmith with a very competent hand. These rings are very rare, especially in silver as we mainly encounter them in gold.

Around the time of the Roman Emperor\'s Gallienus and Aurelian (and the Gallo-Roman empire of Postumus - Claudius II), this ring was have been inheight of fashion. Even today this ring will certainly get you noticed! It is perfectly stable and wearable, with no damage or restoration.
