For sale is a quite beautiful and stunning decorative piece, a huge wooden ships hull on a purpose made stand. This is a three masted ship where the masts have probably never been present but are represented by dowels with finely carved bovine bone ferrules. I am lead to believe that the wood is beech and is of lovely quality. The deck is a separate piece from the main deck, which is solid wood and the whole piece is very substantial and heavy. This is finished off with a lead keel, running the length of the ship. The presence of this lead keels confirms that this model was designed to be afloat and not adorning a sideboard. It’s purpose would have been as a scale representation of a full size ship to test its design and seaworthiness. After it’s initial use had waned it was thankfully saved and a rudimentary stand made of a softwood married to it and its new role as a beautiful decorative item begins. Date wise, the ship is certainly 19th Century, around 1860 or so. There is a lovely patina across the piece and I have left it untouched and unwaxed . As stated, this is a huge piece with a length of 91cms which extends to 97cm to the tip of the bowsprit. It is also 16cm wide and 20cm high, 25cm high when on the later added stand.
