Superb Pair Victorian Hallmarked Solid Silver Salts, 1894, 51.1g Charles Edwards:

Up for sale isthis superb pair of solid silver salts, dating from 1894, with makers marks forCharles Edwards. The salts are approx. 3.5cm high and 5.25cm wide and have repousse hammered decoration. They are bothdecorated with scrolls and acanthus leaves around the sides with a central cartouche. The cartouche hasbeen engraved, although lightly with a H on one and a K on the other.

There is some discolorationto the interior of the bowls, which just needs a proper clean. Theywould make a wonderful addition to any dinner table or collectors cabinet.

The total weightfor the salts is 51.1g.

About theMakers

Thisfirm of manufacturing silversmiths, established in 1865 according to theirillustrated catalogues published in the 1920s, commenced trading under the stlyof William & Charles Edwards, the first marks being entered by WilliamEdwards from 12 Red Lion Street, Clerkenwell, EC, where they are listed until1878 as working silversmiths. Thereafter, marks were entered from the same address,first by Thomas Edwards, followed by Charles Edwards. Afterwards trading underhis own name, Charles Edwards moved to 2A Northampton Square, Clerkenwell,where from 1879 he is listed as a silversmith and again before 1884 to 8Northampton Square, Clerkenwell EC. Continuing to trade under the style ofCharles Edwards, the firm was subsequently taken over by Charles AlbertEldridge (1889-1968), who registered his own mark at Goldsmiths\' Hallon 26thAugust 1924. In 1958 the business was converted into a limited liabilitycompany as C. Edwards Ltd but was sold and closed a couple of years later.
