A magnificent, stunning, handmade, and very rare, 1927 Ruskin pottery, high fired flambe, sang de boeuf, 6\" squat/onion vase. It\'sof shouldered ovoid form, with flared collar neck, decorated in a tonal streakedmottled red/crimson, grey and creamglaze, with impressed marks to the base.

This is actually quite an interesting and unusual Ruskin vase, basically because this vase hasacquired some small bumps created on the outside surface obviously from a very hot kiln firing. (In the photos the cream circles). This is the first time we\'ve ever seen this effect on a Ruskin vase, and it sure adds an extra dimension of distinctive, individual character !!!!

These Ruskinvases are themost highly regarded and collectable of all the \'Sang De Boeuf\'and Flambe glazes, which produced a blood red effect. The \'Sang De Boeuf\' glazes were created by using a reduction of copper and iron oxides at high temperature. This was a very difficult technique, first developed inChinain the 13th century and reinvented by several art potters inEuropein the late 19th century. William Howson Taylor was one of the principal exponents of \'high fired\' techniques, producing a range of colours and unique \'fissured\' glaze effects, collected and admired the world over by Museums and individuals.

Ruskin pottery 1898-1933 was started up by Edward Richard Taylor and his son William Howson Taylor in Smethwick, nearBirmingham; a small art pottery that was later to take the name of the great Victorian writer, critic and historian John Ruskin. From it\'s early days this pottery acquired a reputation for the production of high quality wares whose decoration was based on adventurous, modern and abstract glaze affects.

However, little has been written about Ruskin pottery. By nature Howson Taylor was a private and rather secretive man, Taylor made sure, shortly before his death in 1935, that all records, recipes and personal documents were destroyed. This has meant that he has been poorly served by history, a shadowy figure whose work has been obscured by his better known, but less important contemporaries. There is no monograph or catalogue to give him his rightful place in ceramic history, yet during his lifetime he enjoyed an international reputation enhanced by frequent exhibitions.
