This is a superb antique Victorian circa 1890 sterling silver Scottish agate brooch. The stone is an extremely rare type of Scottish agate and is in fabulous condition.
I have collected agates in Scotland for over 20 years and know where most of the lovely gemstones that Victorians used for their classic jewellery were found.
The majority of Scottish agate jewellery has the classic combination of Montrose agates, bloodstone and jaspers all of which are beautiful in their own right but this particular agate is a wee bit EXTRA special! It is a fabulous rare fortification and plume agate from Glenfarg in Perthshire and has just the highest quality markings and colour you will see in any agate!
The brooch has no hallmarks ( has makers stamp FV) which is fairly normal for pieces of this period, but has been fully tested by a local jeweller and is sterling silver. The width is 2.7 cm ( Just over one inch ) and the pin and C clasp are in good working condition although the pin is not original.
