Superb pair of French cast iron Empire period I think.The best reference book on the subject of antique French iron is Raymond Lecoq’s definitive work,Les Objets de la Vie Domestique (pub. 1979). Unfortunately, it is out of print, difficult to find, & expensive – 400 to 900 Euros - however, it is a must. The coverage is uneven - not enough space is devoted to the rich diversity of French andirons, secular pricket candlesticks, or firebacks - but in general, fireplace implements and lighting are well-addressed, prior to the mid-19th century. We do have the book, but it is under copyright, so we can\'t reproduce images for .Numerous early French firedogs/andirons are illustrated in Lecoq, even though the section is disappointingly short – the last example is virtually identical to this fine pair, and noted as Empireperiod, rather than later revivals from the second half of the 19th century. These are very finely cast – a bit of research might turn up a formal Empire period, Egyptian Revival bronze sphinx that they were based on - and, the small French chenet form is particularly well-suited to small fireplaces. This is one of at least four different variations of sphinx andirons we have seen – it is certainly the best, in terms of detail, and also the largest. We have two smaller pairs to offer, and a French Empire/Restauration period signed cast iron fireback.Condition is nice, looks like rust pitting that been painted at one time– there are no cracks, other damages, or repairs whatsoever. Length – 15” height at front – 10-1/2” from back head to end. maximum width – 3-1/2” height to top of head - 7-1/4\". Total weight –15 lbs. - not including packaging.
