Superb very large 1589 dated German Siegburg stoneware tankard (made in 1800s?) :

We are listing this superb very large 1589 dated German stoneware schnelle (tall cylindrical tankard) made in the style used in the Siegburg region during that period. It had an early 1900s manually typed label glued on the bottom of it in German which indicates it almost certainly was in a German museum at that time as a piece of Siegburg stoneware from the late 16th century (I have provided a picture of the label on the piece, but I have now removed it to verify what the base looks like). You can see an almost identical pewter lidded example of this piece with what appears to be the same panels containing the arms of the Holy Roman Empire on top, Davit (King David?) in the middle, and a local coat of arms with the 1589 date at the bottom on page 28 of THE BEER STEIN BOOK A 400 YEAR HISTORY (that piece was signed L for the potter). Siegburg was one of the major centers of German pottery production in the 15th and 16th centuries, and works from that era are generally museum pieces worth several thousand dollars. However, I believe this piece was more likely made in the 1800s, when there was a revivalist movement in Germany and medieval and renaissance style pieces were made by extremely competent historicist potters. The two most likely possibilities are Peter Loevenich of Siegburg in the early 1800s, or Hubert Schiffer of Raeren in the later 1800s (although his pieces are usually signed with his ligatured HS mark). You can see a full discussion of the works of these two highly regarded potters (many of which are themselves in museums) beginning on page 335 of David Gaimster\'s massive book GERMAN STONEWARE 1200-1900. The huge tankard is almost 15 inches tall, almost 6 inches at its widest point, it makes a very striking display piece, and it is in very good condition (slight stress lines at the bottom handle join, and some remaining residue from the label on the base). Please view the closeup pictures and judge for yourself. Although it is unlikely this piece was actually made in 1589, it definitely was made well over 100 years ago by a master potter, and it is a wonderful piece of historical stoneware. Of course, if it does turn out to be a piece made in 1589, someone is going to make a tremendous buy at my expense.
