Circa 300 BC

(image of roll-out impression pictured below)
Ancient Syrian cylinder seal replica.
The seal depicts a pair of Greek-style Centaurs standing either side of a Tree of Life symbol. Zu, the demon-storm bird of Mesopotain myth hovers in the sky above them.
The seal typifies the period of Greek expansion into Mesopotamia around 300 BC. reflecting a cross-fertilization of Greek and Mesopotamian mythology. Cylinder seals experienced a brief renaissance under the Persians and remained popular with both Greek and Middle Eastern traders.
The Greeks were already guilty of crafting fabulous tales from the ancient stories they inherited from Egypt and Mesopotamia. They developed new mythic creatures of their own introducing unicorns, centaurs, minotaurs and mermaids, to name a few. None of which were previously seen on ancient seals, except for two dimensional profiles of stags and bulls which the Greeks happily interpreted as "unicorns."

ANCIENT IMPRESSIONS produce a number of interesting & unusual ancient artifact replicas, as well as supplying a few hard-to-get items from other sources. Unless otherwise stated, the majority of our replicas are handcrafted, cast in a non-toxic stone composite material which is harder, more durable and realistic than plaster or plastic. Items are hand-finished to duplicate the original artifact as closely as possible and individually checked for quality-control. Our workshop is located on the edge of the forest in Australia's Blue Mountains. Inquiries welcome.
