\"Sturt\'s Desert Pea\" - T & R Boote, c1901

This uncommon, and beautiful, antique, majolica, tile was produced by, \"T. & R. Boote, Ltd.,\" circa 1901, and was discovered in New York city, as a back splash tile of an antique washstand

(Photo of washstand provided).

This tile was created by Boote to take advantage of a marketing opportunity in Australia, taking advantage of the event of this country\'s Federation. So, why not create tiles, which feature a realistic rendering of a nice red, \"Sturt\'s Desert Pea\" (Swainsona Formosa) flower? After all, wouldn\'t this national symbol of Australia\'s unique flora and fauna, be popular? This tile would be a symbol of national pride at a time of great Australian political fervor.

(We have included a photo of this unique Australian flower in its natural state.)

The tile\'s realistic, relief, design features this strange, red, flower, with its distinctive dark, purplish, stamen, flanked by its green stems and leaves, floating on a dark green background. We have seen two colorways for this design, this red flower on dark green, and a blue flower on a lighter green field. We think our offered colorway is the best, as most of the actual flowers we have seen are red, and the darker field simply looks better.

Condition: This exotic tile is in very good condition. The tile displays the typical crazing one finds in brilliantly glazed antique tiles. The right edge displays a few glaze nibbles.

The provided scans of this tile are unforgiving in their ability to reveal flaws of any kind. So, you can clearly see, this tile is in a very good state. The verso (back side) of this tile is clear of mortar, but shows marks from removed cement. The back is clearly embossed with Boote\'s famous greyhound trademark.
