Greetings. You are offerding on the original pencil preliminaries for two (2)daily comic strips titledTAILSPIN TOMMYdrawn by the legendarycomic strip artist, HAL FORREST.

Publication Information and Description: Theseparticular daily comic strips are numbered\"3558\" and \"3562\" in pencil in the margins. They are undated, but, if the numbering is correct, and based upon the numerical sequence of other published examples of the strip seen on line, I estimate that thesewere published (or scheduled to be published) in September of 1939.Thesestripseach feature five panels, in differing configurations. The paper sizefor both is approximately 29” by 8.25”. The strips are\"signed\"with what appears to be an inkstamp,“Hal Forrest” in a frame. No copyright information on the strips. I have no idea why these were not inked or if these numbered stripswere published in this or a different form.

These areNOTcopiesor stats or proofs. Theseare the original art, drawn (pencils only) by Hal Forrest.Classic Tailspin Tommy aviation action and adventure.Nice examples of rare pencil preliminaries for this strip anda great opportunity to seeForrest\'s pencil work in pure form and how he instructed/worked with his inker, Reynold Brown.

These dailiesfeature Tommy held at gun point as his plane is on fire and soon to crash. The villain parachutes away, but Tommy is forced to land in a small mountain lake. His fate is uncertain as the second strip ends with the calm surface of the lake and no sign of Tommy who leapt from the crashing plane.Nice action and suspense. Strip 3558 has more detailed pencilsthan 3562 (I\'m sure Forrest\'s inkerloved the \"small lake in mountain area below\" instruction in the blank area at the bottom of the first panel of 3562.

Character and Artist Information:

TAILSPIN TOMMY was drawn by renowned comic artist and illustrator Hal Forrest (1895-1959) from its creation in 1928 (by Forrest and writer Glenn Chaffin) until the end of the strips run in 1942. While he was with the 479th Pursuit Squadron, U.S. Air Corps Reserve, at Clover Field in Santa Monica, Forrest drew Artie the Ace, the first aviation comic strip.

Tailspin Tommy was one of America’s first aviation comic strips and took full advantage of the country’s fixation with all things flying. The main characters were Tommy, Skeeter and Betty Lou Barnes. All three worked for Three-Point Airlines but spent most of their time in adventures with sky pirates, crazy inventors, lost races and hidden treasures.

Living in Littleville, Colorado, young Tommy Tomkins had such an obsession with flying that he was given the nickname Tailspin Tommy before he ever actually went inside a plane. Although Tommy took an aero-engineering correspondence course, his real introduction to aviation happened when mail pilot Milt Howe made an emergency landing in a field near Tommy\'s neighborhood. Tommy watched the downward spiral of Milt\'s plane and ran to help. Howe rewarded Tommy with a greasemonkey job in Texas at the Three Point Airlines, where he soon became a pilot along with his girlfriend, Betty Lou Barnes, and his best buddy, Peter \"Skeeter\" Milligan. The trio eventually became part owners in Three Point and took off for many airborne adventures.

Tommy’s comic strip adventures were reprinted in comic books (including Famous Funnies #1)andBig Little Books. Universal Studios released two Tailspin Tommy serials starring Maurice Murphy and Noah Berry, Jr. Monogram later released four TT movies starring John Trent.

As described by comic strip historian Coulton Waugh in his seminal 1947 study, The Comics, “…one of the first realistic air strips…hair-raising suspense…specialized in up-to-the-minute air chatter...”

Jerry Weist, in his The Comic Art Price Guide (Ivy Press, 2011), describes TT as “…one of the first and most interesting aviator strips…”was an aviation-themed comic strip drawn by Hal Forrestfrom its creation in 1928through 1942. Syndicated by Bell for most of its run, the strip started as a daily and later a Sunday was added.

The strip wasoriginally writtenby Glenn Chaffin, a newspaper journalist and press agent and drawn by Hal Forrest. After buying out Chaffin\'s interest, Forrest took over the scripting in 1933; he wrote and drew the strip solo for the next three years. In 1936,Forrest took on an assistant, Reynold Brown, who thereafter inked (uncredited) over Forrest\'s pencils. The strip was syndicated by Bell for most of its run.
