TEN YEARS A COWBOY written by C. C. (Charles Clement) Post with addenda by Tex Bender, the Cowboy Fiddler. Copyright 1898--this is the 1899 printing.

ALSO

THIRTY-ONE YEARS ON THE PLAINS AND IN THE MOUNTAINS or, The Last Voice From the Plains. An Authentic Record of a Life Time of Hunting, Trapping, Scouting and Indian Fighting in the Far West. Written by Capt. William F. Drannan. Copyright 1900--this book is the 1904 printing.

Both books are published by Rhodes & McClure Publishing Company of Chicago and have beautiful, nearly matching silver gilt embossed cloth bindings.

Both books have been rebound reusing all the original materials. I have built a custom, heavy-duty, leather-lined box to house these beautiful old books.

7 3/4 x 5 5/8 inches---471 pages + 20 pages of ads in the back (including 16 pages of a speech by R. S. Rhodes at the14th convention of American Teachers of the Deaf at Flint, Michigan as a prelude to the Audiophone; an instrument that allowed deaf persons to hear through the medium of the teeth.

THIRTY-ONE YEARS ON THE PLAINS AND IN THE MOUNTAINS

Captain William F. Drannan’s (1832-1913) book is the mostly fictional “reminiscences” of a self-styled scout and Indian fighter. He was born on the ocean during his parent\'s voyage from France to America. They settled in Tennessee. At the age of 4 he was orphaned by a cholera epidemic. He was then raised by a man named Drake. At age 15 he set out on his own and into an adventurous life in the west. In 1847 he was taken under the wing of Kit Carson and became an Indian scout among many other things. Many of his facts are correct, but no student of Kit Carson, the Modoc War or of the history of the West takes him seriously. His prose (some think that his wife wrote the book) is lurid, but interesting and typical of the kind of books that made huge impressions on the minds of boys growing up in the days before World War I. He is the hero of nearly every event he describes.

Drannan wrote two books about his life: Thirty-One Years on the Plains and in the Mountains; or, The Last Voice From the Plains (1900) and Chief of Scouts (1910).

The book is illustrated with numerous old photographs and drawings.

7 3/4 x 5 5/8 inches---586 pages + 10 pages of ads in the back

CONDITION:

Both books are in very good condition with significant restoration. All the original materials which show (and some which don’t) have been used to restore these books. The cloth covers are clean. The text blocks have been rebound into the covers using new jaquard cloth spine reinforcing (instead of the original cheap mesh mull). The original spine caps were reused. The spine ends have been repaired with original cloth (cloth from the same book).

The original endpapers have been retained and reused, but new endpapers form the hinges. These new endpapers are photocopies of the originals on acid free paper. There are a few penciled inscriptions in the front endpapers of both books that I have left to reflect the book’s histories.

Authentic and archival materials have been used throughout--non acidic glues and pastes, nonacidic Japanese papers for reinforcing, etc.

The pages in the Ten Years book are browned with age and as a consequence should be handled carefully. There are no major marks, underlining, or highlighting. The paper is better in the Thirty-One Years book, but the pages are toned and the paper was cheap and thin so there are occasional tiny edge tears. All tears I found that were more than a 1/4 inch or so were repaired nearly invisibly--and not with any kind of tape. All pages and illustrations are present in both books.

The slip case was constructed of acid-free materials and is lined around the edges with genuine leather. It is heavy-duty and should last for many years. this with other items from my store and Save on Shipping!
