This is an absolutely wonderful historical advertising piece.
It\'s a self-framed tin lithograph sign from San Antonio, Texas.From c. 1901.It\'s a self-framed tin lithograph sign promoting the Texas Hot Sulphur Water Sanitarium Company in San Antonio, Texas.
Very large -The sign itself is @ 34.75\"x22.75.\"The frame is @ 40.75\"x28.75.\"
The frame is marked San Antonio, Tex.The verbiage on the sign mentions the health aspects of the sanitarium - no snow or ice in the winter or sunstrokes in the summer. Pure, dry climate.
The sign offers a phenomenal image of the hotel & grounds.There are also images of horse and buggies, automobiles, people in Victorian outfits, American Flag.
The sign & frame are all condition.
The sign is in terrific condition, esp when considering that it\'s over 100 years old.The graphics show thru beautifully.Some overall wear which includes -Some flecks, scuffs, rub marks, scratches.Some mild warping.Pitting areas.
The frame is in normal, used condition.Some overall wear which includes some scratches, dings, corner damage, edge wear, split corners.Some history -In November, 1899, a group of local & Northern investors secured a 25 year lease & announced plans to build a\"large & commodious hotel with attractive grounds and park in addition to the bath house and all other conveniences and ample capitol with which to make improvements of the highest class in accordance with modern demands and of a permanent nature.
The investors formed the Texas Hot Sulphur Water Sanitarium Company.They purchased property & bylate 1900, they had completed a bath house & 3 swimming pools.The bath house, which had separate facilities for men & women, had 3 public pools & 45 private rooms w marble partitions & solid porcelain tubs.
By 1902, a hotel was completed with 80 rooms & modern-day conveniences such as hot & cold water, steam heat, electric & gas lights, telephones.
An ostrich farm was relocated from San Pedro Springs so that the ladies could easily acquire feathers for their fashionable outfits.
The 1st structure burned to the ground in 1894.The most famous version of the spa was its replacement, a lavish Victorian style structure built in 1900.It became a renowned, world-class vacation destination for celebrities, world leaders & wealthy industrialists.Visitors included Douglas Fairbanks, Cecil B. DeMille, Charlie Chaplin, Will Rogers, Tom Mix, Teddy Roosevelt, Porfirio Diaz.The legendary hotel burned in 1925. The bath house burned twice - 1988 & 1997.
