THE APE, 1940, Boris Karloff, Classic Monogram Mad Doctor Movie, LAST PRINT, PD:
$97.99

You\'ll be offerding on our LAST 16mm print of that classic B horror film, THE APE (1940, Monogram) starring Boris Karloff, Maris Wrixon, Gene O\'Donnell, Henry Hall, Ray \"Crash\" Corrigan, Philo McCullough, Selmer Jackson, Dorothy Vaughn, and Gertrude Hoffman. We love this movie. I know, I know...it\'s a cheap Monogram horror film. Yet there\'s something about this film that stands out. First off, it has--for a Monogram--a wonderful music score. Not H. J. Salter by any stretch, but still quite good by poverty row standards. Secondly, it has a wonderful \"rural\" feel to it. Monogram made a number of \"rural horror films\" (VOODOO MAN, REVENGE OF THE ZOMBIES, etc.) and they all have a kind of creepy small town, out-in-the-sticks feel to them. THE APE is probably the best of the bunch. Thirdly, it boasts fine performances from all of its cast--especially Karloff. McCullough has a very nice (inexplicably uncredited) part as the town bastard. The story line has Boris playing a mad scientist trying desperately to find a cure for paralysis, but in order to cure his patient (Wrixon) he needs human spinal fluid, the taking of which will kill the human \"donor.\" It\'s a real problem for Boris, since he\'s basically a \"good\" mad scientist at heart. However, when an escaped circus ape crashes in through his laboratory window, Karloff, thinking quickly like any good mad scientist, subdues and kills the ape using chemicals and then stabbing it in in the back. Boris then has a brilliant idea: he skins the ape (performed off screen of course) and creates an ape costume in which he roams around the countryside (it\'s actually Ray Corrigan inside the ape suit) killing off \"bad\" people for their spinal fluid. Hall is lovably wonderful as the kindly local sheriff who just can\'t quite figure things out. Wrixon is very beautiful and turns in a great performance as Karloff\'s paralyzed friend and patient. O\'Donnell gives it his all as the concerned boyfriend, who thinks Karloff\'s experiments on his girlfriend are causing more harm than good. The final ten minutes are very, very good, with a memorable final scene. This is arguably the best horror film produced by Monogram studios. Don\'t miss your chance at this poverty row horror classic. Now...about the print itself, it\'s a great old 16mm print that appears to be a reversal, reduction, or dupe of some kind. However, that being said, the density and contrast are really quite good and the on-screen images are nice and crisp--especially for a dupe. In fact, the visual aspects of this print look as good as some originals I\'ve seen before. Again, it IS a dupe of some kind, but visually it\'s about as good as a dupe can look. The audio track sounds okay but there is a minor problem; the really scenes with loud, booming music sound a bit distorted. This is noticeable in several moments here and there in the film, but probably the worst of it is in the opening titles music, which is a loud circus music score. The scenes where the music is softer sound okay. And the dialogue sounds okay throughout the print, it\'s just when the music gets loud that you really notice the distortion. So overall the audio sounds okay for the vast majority of the film. Even better, the print\'s physical condition is excellent with only light wear. Hairlines and splices are at very low levels. In short, it\'s a desirable print of a great B-horror film--and quite uncommon in 16mm. Furthermore, this film appears to be solidly in the PUBLIC DOMAIN and would make for a nice film-to-video transfer. Don\'t let the sale time run out! offer soon... No vinegar syndrome.
