Antique pottery in good taste – harmic.littleA truly magnificent Westerwald saltglazed stoneware tavern jug (krug) with a pouring lip and with its original pewter lid; the body with magnificent sgraffito \'poppy seed\' designs and related foliage colored in the most stunning cobalt blue; Germany, circa 1700 - 1720. This is one of the finest Westerwald pouring jugs technically-speaking and in terms of its overall condition, that we have had the pleasure of offering our dedicated Westerwald dealers and collectors and, believe me, we have had some fine examples over the years! This imposing beer mug is approximately 10 inches tall measuring to the top of the finial of the pewter lid. It has a fine bulbous shape and is magnificently potted and decorated with absolutely beautiful \'poppy head\' designs in striking blue. Behind these are amazing \'psychedelic\' foliage designs which, to continue the 80s metaphor, really blow your mind!!For Westerwald stonewares in an American Colonial context see the fascinating article by Janine Skerry and Suzanne Hood in Saltglazed Stoneware in Early America (Chapter 2: Emblems of Church and State) and also the fine trail-blazing work done by Ivor Noel Hume in his large and diverse output on 17th and 18th century saltglazed stoneware. The condition of this magnificent mug is absolutely wonderful with no chips, cracks or restoration and we believe this to be the original pewter lid which is an added bonus.  You will simply not find a better example of early eighteenth century Westerwald than this and we commend it to anyone whether they are a seasoned collector or dealer or someone thinking of starting a collection.Goos luck with your offer and please come and visit us again for the very best in English and American Colonial stoneware and saltglazed wares.  Insurance is included with shipping.
