DESCRIPTION: 3 parts (xx, 301, [1] p.) : 14 plates ; Tall octavo, 23cm With illustrations by Henry Alken, and a portrait by D. Maclise. Nimrod is the pseudonym of C.J. Apperley. A work about horses and horsemanship in different contexts, hence the title: The Chace, the Turf, and the Road. The Chace being foxhunting and the Turf being racing [Newmarket, Epsom, Ascot,] and the Road being stage-coaching and carriage handling. Nimrod's writing is wreathed in copious classical allusions, and sometimes the foilage gets in the way of his object.
NOTES: A new edition by Lane was published in 1927.

CONDITION: VERY GOOD. Plates foxed, else near FINE Pages fresh and bright. Solid page and cover attachment with no hint of trouble in the joints. Spine a bit sunned. Corners bumped and rubbed. Foredge of front board split for 1.5". Full caps lightly touched and not frayed.

BINDING: Green cloth. Gilt vingnette of racehorses in full gallop. Fornt and back, a blind tooled border with vignettes of [top] a man in a bowler holding a feather above his head [bottom] a stage coach, with scroll work completing a border. Decorative gilt spine with curious disc title devices gilt with title in blind, also the bottom disc with reading in blind on gilt disc JOHN MURRAY LONDON with the date 1837 at the center, above a banner gilt with author: BY NIMROD.
