The Essays of Montaigne translated by George B. Ives. With an Introduction by Andre Gide and an accompanying Handbook to the Essays which includes the notes upon the text by the translator and a series of comments on the Essays by Grace Norton. New York, The Heritage Press. Copyright 1946, by the George Macy Companies, Inc. Volume 1, 2, and an accompanying handbook. This set was put out by the Heritage Club. Also includes the paper from the club advertising and describing the set. It states: \"On each volume, the shelf-back is covered with a staunch binder\'s linen which is treated to a silk finish and then stained a rich brown and then stamped with the title in genuine gold leaf. On each volume, this handsome [we think!] \"gold-marbled\" paper is of a different color: one is red, one is green [the manufacturers call the color \"ocean\"!], and on is what the manufacturers call \"tulip\". Each volume is then placed in a slip-case made of boards covered with paper of a warm but neutral gray.\"
Sleeves show discoloration and wear especially around the corners. Some white marks on the spine of Volume I. Also, a small piece of the marbled paper on the back cover is torn off. The inside cover of all three books all appear to have had a sticker or something that has been removed. Also there appears to be some staining/discoloration around the edges of the inside covers. The books are in very good condition. Pages are clean and unmarked. Binding is tight. Overall, a nice set.
