KENNETH GRAHAME

LONDON: Methuen & Co., 1908 [published date: 1908]. Rare Second Edition. 8vo. 7.75\" x 5.5\" Inches. (LxB). Pp. [8], 302 pages, half-title, frontispiece present. Top edges gilt, remainder untrimmed. Bound in the original publisher\'s blue-green pictorial cloth, spine and upper cover elaborately decorated in gilt, top edges gilt. Scarce. An unsophisticated copy of Grahame’s first book written for rather than about children, the second edition printed in the same month as the First Edition -\"October 1908.\" The timeless adventures of Ratty, Mole, and Mr Toad, which originated in letters Grahame wrote to his seven-year old son “Mouse”. Methuen wasn’t sure what to make of the book, “no lighthearted story about a countryside community of animals but a long and ramifying fable”, (Grolier 100) and released it on its adult rather than juvenile list, but children and their parents understood it from the start and a second edition was required with a month of publication. By the time of the E.H. Shepard illustrated edition in 1932 the book was recognised as a children’s classic. Grolier Children’s 100 #61. The Wind in the Willows eventually went through some 100 editions in its first 60 years. With the bookplate of Richard Adams [Author of \"Watership Down\"] on front pastedown. A classic work. Provenance: Bookplate of Richard Adams [Author of \"Watership Down\"] in first volume. Richard Adams, writing of his love of books in his autobiography makes a special mention of \'Oliver Twist\', saying \"The Dodger\'s dialogue throughout, culminating in his glorious appearance before the magistrates, has been a resource and a solace to me for years.\" (The Day Gone By, An Autobiography, 1990, page 100).
It comes as no surprise that writers are often also committed and enthusiastic bibliophiles. Historically, one might think of Samuel Pepys, meticulously ensuring the preservation ‘for the benefit of posterity’ of his 3,000-strong collection at Magdalene College, Cambridge, or his contemporary and fellow diarist John Evelyn, whose enormous library required 8 days of sales at Christie’s between June 1977 and July 1978. Thomas Hardy, Evelyn Waugh, Hugh Walpole, Ian Fleming and J.R.R. Tolkien all built collections of important works, particularly those by fellow writers, the study of which can significantly enhance our understanding of their fiction. The same can now be said for Richard Adams (1920-2016), whose novel Watership Down, first published in 1972, is one of the most important and best-selling classics of modern imaginative literature. First brought to the screen in 1978, the recently announced new animated adaptation (forthcoming from the BBC and Netflix) serves to confirm its appeal for acontemporary readership
