Norman Thelwell 1923-2004
Norman Thelwell was an Englishcartoonist best known for his humorous illustrations of ponies and horses.
Born in Birkinhead,North West Englandhe signed up for the East Yorkshire Regiment in 1941 and became art editor ofan army magazine in India.
In 1944 he took evening art classesat Nottingham School of Art where he met his future wife Rhona.
After Nottingham he took a degree at LiverpoolCollege of Art and in 1950 began work at Wolverhampton College of Art teachingdesign and illustration.He gave this role up to become a freelance cartoonistin 1956.
He became a contributor to thesatirical magazine Punch and began a 25 year relationship in 1952 which yieldedover 1500 cartoons.
His first collection of cartoonsAngels on Horseback was published in 1957.
Known to many simply as Thelwell,hefound his true comic niche with Pony Club Girls and Their Comic Ponies,asubject for which he became best known and a subject which is particularlypopular
response.
