Born on November 24, 1864, in Albi, France, HENRI DE TOULOUSE-LAUTREC pursued painting as a youth and went on to create tremendous innovations in lithography and drawing. He became known for his full color stone-lithograph posters, influenced by Japanese styles, and for imbuing marginalized populations such as prostitutes, working nightclub dancers and cripples (like himself) with dignity, joy and humanity through his art. Notable works include “At the Moulin Rouge” and “The Streetwalker.” He died on September 9, 1901. HENRI DE TOULOUSE-LAUTREC is considered a tremendous influence on both Expressionism and the Paris Avant-Garde (as well as the graphic arts) of the teens and 1920s (and beyond) of the 20th century.
THE DRAWING

This is an ORIGINAL DRAWING of two young FEMALE DANCERS. It is sketched in GRAPHITE (lead pencil) on a cream-tan paper, blank on the verso.

It appears to have been torn from a sketchbook---the left paper-edge has that ragged appearance consistent with that. Toulouse-Lautrec would often sketch from life in the bars, boites, bordellos and erotic stage shows of late 19th century Paris. The drawing, which is rough in places, but very spontaneous and electrifying, may have been sketched quickly as the dancers performed on the stage in front of him; possibly at the \"Moulin Rouge\" or similar Paris nightclub.

This is a UNIQUE, ORIGINAL hand-drawn work, NOT a print, litho, or any other form of printed reproduction, we can definitely assure you of this.

The paper-size measures 10 3/4\" x 8\" (28 cm x20 cm). It is currently unframed and has been in storage for a long time.

PENCIL-SIGNED (as the Toulouse-Lautrec Monogram): T L (with the crossed \"T\"), in the lower-right.

Not dated, circa 1880s to 1890s. Although its full history is not known it was reputed to have been sold at sale, in PARIS, at the Hotel Drouot sales, in the 1920s or early 1930s. (There is no surviving paperwork, so we have to sell it \"as is\"---the paper is definitely very old.)
