AWARDS: Honorable Mention \'08!

***************

Why include the awards? Many irisarians use awards as a factor in selecting new irises to try. The goal of the awards system is to call attention to new varieties of horticultural merit. Roughly 80-90 (out of hundreds) new tall bearded irises that have been in commerce for two years are awarded the Honorable Mention (HM). Two years after getting the HM, varieties are eligible for the Award of Merit (AM). This award is given to roughly 12 varieties each year. The next level is the John C. Wister medal which goes to just three of the eligible AMs per year. The next level is the W. R. Dykes Medal that is given to one iris a year. This award, however, is limited to US introductions only so many irises are excluded from consideration. All of that being said, there are many, many great irises out there that have few if any awards.

Bearded irises are quite hardy, drought-tolerant and easy to grow. They grow between 2\" to 48+\" tall and after blooming, the leaves remain evergreen throughout the rest of the summer season! These plants thrive in all types of soil and conditions but do best with at least 6 hours of sun in well-drained soil. They are a wonderful perennial (comes back every year) that multiplies, an average of 2-6 new babies annually, adding more and more beauty to your garden as time goes by!

Irises bloom and reproduce in the Spring. Then they need a short period of time to regenerate from the energy spent during that time. Also, the new plants need this period of time to grow its own roots. A successful transplant is contingent on this period of rest, growth and restoration. Therefore, digging/shipping does not occur immediately. For irises, planting season usually occurs in late summer to fall, preferably at least 6 wks before the first frost.

You\'ll receive 1 fresh/healthy, bloom-size, bare-rooted rhizome/fan that\'s freshly dug, cleaned, trimmed, labeled (guaranteed true to registered name) and dried (for 1 or 2 days) just before shipping via Priority Mail.

Please notice in the photo that bulb sizes can vary.

Our selling season begins inApril and ENDS IN JULY. That\'s when we transition to the digging/shipping phase of the season.
