Discreption:During the ancient times in Africa before the passports were used, Africans used miniature colorful masks to identify their tribes or countries of origin when traveling across the continent. A mask, such as this colorful terra cotta example, would be sewn onto a piece of cloth and kept in a leather pouch or possibly worn in the small of the back. Some have two small holes on the top to be worn as amulets. They are miniature copies of a family mask and sometimes received libations.
