Description

We are very pleased to offer 9 books of Eugene Sue’s 19-volume series “The Mysteries of the People” or “History of a Proletarian Family Across the Ages.” This work of fiction graphically traces the special features of the several systems of class rule as they succeeded each other from epoch to epoch, together with the nature of the struggle between the contending classes. It was created to be a European history that depicts the struggle between the ruling and the ruled classes, the oppressors and the oppressed. It was translated from the original French by Daniel DeLeon and published by the New York Labor News Co., between 1904 and 1918. Eugene Sue was a 19th-century novelist and champion of workers. He is best known for “The Mysteries of Paris” and “The Wandering Jew.”

Included are volumes 1-4 (considered as the overture to the historic drama which begins to unfold in volume 5) and volumes 7, 10, 11, 13, and 18. A description of each volume is found below.

All nine books are in very good condition. The boards and spines exhibit very little wear. The bindings and text blocks are tight. There are no loose or missing pages. Pages are free of water stains, creases, tears, and pen/pencil marks, with the exception of a small tear on one page. Light age tanning is present. Each book has an inscription and a volume number on the right front end paper, Please use the photos to assist you in determining if the condition of these books meets with your requirements.

Volume 1: The Gold Sickle or Hena, The Virgin of the Isle of Sen. This is a tale of the Gallic people as they are introduced upon the stage of history in the simplicity of their customs, their industrious habits, their bravery, loft yet childlike—such as they were at the time of the Roman invasions by Caesar, 58 B.C. Published in 1904 by the New York Labor News.

Volume 2: The Brass Bell or The Chariot of Death. This is a tale of Caesar’s Gallic Invasion. It is the introduction to the class struggle, that starts with the conquest of Gaul, and, in the subsequent seventeen stories, is pathetically and instructively carried across the ages, down to the French Revolution in 1848. Published in 1907 by the New York Labor News; New Edition 1916.

Volume 3: The Iron Collar or Faustina and Syomara. This is a tale of slavery under the Romans. The story deals with the fate of two children of Guilhern, the central character in “The Brass Bell.” Published in 1909 by the New York Labor News.

Volume 4: The Silver Cross or The Carpenter of Nazareth. This is a tale of Jerusalem. Published in 1909 by the New York Labor News.

Volume 7: The Branding Needle or the Monastery of Charolles. This is a tale of the first communal charter. Published in 1908 by the New York Labor News.

Volume 10: The Iron Arrow Head or The Buckler Maiden. This is a tale of the Northman invasion. Published in 1908 by the New York Labor News.

Volume 11: The Infant’s Skull or The End of the World. This is a tale of the millennium (1000 A.D.). Published in 1904 by the New York Labor News.

Volume 13: The Iron Pincers or Mylio and Karvel. This is a tale of the Albigensian Crusades. Published in 1909 by the New York Labor News.

Volume 18: The Blacksmith’s Hammer or The Peasant Code. This is a tale of the Grand Monarch prior to the French Revolution. Published in 1910 by the New York Labor News.
