GROUP OF OVER 250 COVERS (only), SPANNING 1859-1880\'s (with some early 20th century family covers). It was reported that John Grimball served longer than any man in the Confederate military. He resigned his US Navy commission days after his native South Carolina seceded from the Union and joined the palmetto state\'s navy on or about Dec 29, 1860. He was present when the Citadel cadets fired on the Star of the West on 9 JAN 1861, preventing her from delivering supplies to Fort Sumter. His CSS Shenandoah caused havoc on US merchant ships until she surrendered on 6 NOV 1865, a full seven months after the Gen Robert E Lee surrendered his army. AN INTERESTING AND WORTHWHILE RESEARCH GROUP. The early covers have the stamps plundered. Includes cover while on the the Macedonia, covers from the CSS Baltic, covers sent to Grimball during the war while he was in Europe, two covers sent to him in Mexico where he was hiding after the war, letters sent to him when he felt it was safe to return to South Carolina, letters sent while an attorney in New York, etc. All letters are not shown. There are over 250. This is from an AWARD WINNING EXHIBIT OF THE LATE JOE HOLLEMAN. Winner adds $8.00 insured postage. Member APS #192625. Thanks!
