Books 1 and 2 are The Poetical Works of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow Volume I published in 1880 in Boston by Houghton, Mifflin and Company.Books 3 and 4 are The Poetical Works of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow Volume II published in 1880 in Boston by Houghton, Mifflin and Company.Books 5 and 6 are The Complete Prose Works of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow with His Later Poems with A Biographical Sketch published in 1883 in Boston by Houghton, Mifflin and Company.Some features of these beautiful antique books are:The books are large and heavy. Each measures 12 inches high x 9.5 inches wide x 1 inch thick. Each book weighs about 3 lbs 2 oz. The covers are flexible soft brown leather on cardboard backing and are scuffed and worn. They each bear the word \"Longfellow\" in bright gold gilt on the front. The top, bottom and side page edges are painted in gold gilt.Book I has a frontispiece which is a black and white picture of Longfellow and a copy of his signature. This is said to be a portrait from a photograph. It is protected by a tissue cover. And Book 5 also has a frontispiece which is another different black and white picture of Longfellow and a copy of his signature. This is also said to be a portrait from a photograph. It is also protected by a tissue cover. Each book has about 7 full page black and white plates protected by tissue covers. Each book has many black and white illustrations - on nearly every page.The pages are lightly toned and I noted a few small areas of foxing. All of the spines are intact. The photographs show the beautiful pattern of the fine marbled end papers.A complete set is rarely found.
