This very rarely seen book was printed in 1994, compiled and edited by Katherine Sams Wiley ( daughter of the Commanding Officer of the 71st), is a very complete day-by-day mission-by-mission accounting of the 71st Tactical Reconnaissance Group of the USAAF Fifth Air Force who served in the Southwest Pacific Area in World War Two. As far as i know, this is the only edition of this book. The narration of the book is mostly the direct memories of members of the 71st TRG who were either interviewed or shared their memories through correspondence with the editor. The history extends from the Group and Squadron formations in the U.S.A. through the deployments to various forward operating areas in the SWPA, to the end of World War Two with the defeat of Japan. Of special interest is a transcription of a recorded interview with Congressional MEDAL OF HONOR recipient Major William A. Shomo concerning the action of Jan. 11 1945 when he shot down 7 Japanese aircraft in 10 minutes, and his wingman 1st Lt. Paul Lipscomb shot down an additional 3 Japanese planes to earn the Distinguished Service Cross. Maj. Shomo gives a blow-by-blow, second-by-second account of one of the most incredible air combat actions of WWll. One of the NEWSLETTERS included in this sale has photos of the award ceremony when Gen. Whitehead awarded the MOH to Maj. Shomo. There are many B&W photographs in the book. Included in this sale are 24 ORIGINAL B&W PHOTOGRAPHIC PRINTS that were (mostly) taken by members of the 17th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron (Bomb), many of them taken by my father, who was a member of the 17th Tac Recon Sq.(B). As far as i know, at least a dozen of the photo prints have never been published anywhere or even seen by anyone outside of my family. The separate photos are mostly of airplanes and crewmen with the 17th. Of special interest are a few photos of the B-25D Mitchell Bomber \"Little Joe\" Serial Number 42-87281. PayPal Only. No International sales or offers.
