Norman Thelwell 1923-2004
Norman Thelwell was an English cartoonist best known for his humorous illustrations of ponies and horses.
Born in Birkinhead,North West England he signed up for the East Yorkshire Regiment in 1941 and became art editor of an army magazine in India.
In 1944 he took evening art classes at Nottingham School of Art where he met his future wife Rhona.
After Nottingham he took a degree at Liverpool College of Art and in 1950 began work at Wolverhampton College of Art teaching design and illustration.He gave this role up to become a freelance cartoonist in 1956.
He became a contributor to the satirical magazine Punch and began a 25 year relationship in 1952 which yielded over 1500 cartoons.
His first collection of cartoons Angels on Horseback was published in 1957.
Known to many simply as Thelwell,he found his true comic niche with Pony Club Girls and Their Comic Ponies,a subject for which he became best known and a subject which is particularly popular.
