Petrus Regout & Co Maastricht, Holland.

The Royal Sphinx factory was established by Petrus Regout in 1834. It was located in Maastricht, Holland. In 1878 Petrus Regout died and his sons reorganized the company and adopted the Sphinx trademark and backstamp to be used as a company mark and logo. The company then had already been using the image of a recumbent sphinx as its logo for twenty years. The Sphinx trademark and backstamp changed over time. Since 1899 the company was called De Sphinx. It was one of the most important Dutch tableware producers from the latter half of the 19th century until World War II.

While most Maastricht potteries products were white and undecorated some was from the very beginning decorated by hand. The hand painting was mostly done by women and girls using stamps for repeated patterns and a paint brush for flowers and fine borders. Their leaf and floral \'boerenbont\' patterns that initially were copied from English and German potteries eventually grew with own designs to some five or six hundred, each coming in various colour variants. style=\"font-style: normal; font-weight: normal; margin-bottom: 0cm; orphans: 2; widows: 2;\">

J.M. Vrolijk (1845 – 1894)

Jan Vrolijk was a student of his brother Adrianus Jacobus Vrolijk (1834 - 1862) and painted predominantly landscapes with cattle. He was also an excellent watercolorist. Vrolijk obtained several medals at various exhibitions and a large part of his work went abroad. He was awarded medals at Arti (Royal Bronze) 1879; Zutphen (Gold) 1881; Amsterdam (Honorable Mention) 1883; South Kennsington (Bronze) 1874; Berlin \"Summer\'s Morning\" (Gold) 1888; Chicago World\'s Fair \"Summer\'s Evening\" 1893. Jan Vrolijk was a member of the Pulchri Studio in The Hague where his work was exhibited. Various museums have work from his hand, including the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, and Mesdag museum, which published a monograph by Jan Vrolijk.

Vroijk paintings emphasize outdoor scenes with sun, light and air; the image as a snapshot as the painter saw it. This is also called Impressionism, Impressionistslove offreedom, reason and feeling important that determined the art of the 19th century.

Looking at the Sphinx trademark and backstamp the vases can be quite accurately to around 1883 (see [link removed by ]). Thepictures on the vases are painted after Vrolijk’s work, possibly \"A Summer\'s Morning\" which he showcased at the Berlin Exhibition where in the foreground we see cows standing in the water drinking, the sun shining upon the meadows in the distance with myriad tints and tones. A soft etherial atmosphere pervades the whole.

The work gives a beautiful impression into the Dutch countryside of the 19th century with blaarkop cows grazing a small meadow along what seems to be a river bank alined

with pollard willows, and a shepherd and his helping hand in traditional costumes and clogs. A beautiful work of art!
