Tiny French medal depicting the Sacred Heart of Jesus on the obverse and Mary and Jesus on the other, with the inscription \"Notre Dame du Sacre Coeur PPN\" (pray for us) around the portrait of a crowned Mary holding Jesus.
Probably early 1900s, the gilding on this little medal is worn with age in places where the base metal shows through, but it still shines. It is marked FRANCE on the bail ring. The medal weighs 1.1 gm including bail ring. Height is 1.5 cm (5/8ths inch) including the bail ring. Lovely little item for a bracelet or on a fine chain.
St Marguerite or Margaret Mary Alacoque founded the worship of the Sacred Heart at Paray Le Monial in the 17th century after seeing visions of Jesus, and in the 19th century the town became second only to Lourdes as a place of pilgrimage.The church of Paray Le Monial, which is in theSaone et Loire, in Burgundy, has been a place of worship and pilgrimage forhundreds of years. The Benedictine priory was founded here in AD 973, andthe most venerated buildings include the Chapel of the Visitation and theBasilica of the Sacred Heart which was formerly the church ofthemonastery.
