When the U. S. entered WW1 they needed a bayonet for the Remington Rifle so the U.S. adoptedthe British 1913 Bayonet and changed the designation to become the 1917 Remington Bayonet.Two companies were awarded contracts to manufacture these bayonets, Remington and Winchester.Remington used Remington inside a circle and Winchester used a W inside a circle for their mark.It was common to date a bayonet by the year of manufacture,like the US M1905 bayonet which wasdated each year 1906-1922. When the 1917 bayonet was being manufactured the military wanted the date1917 as the Model number,not year of manufacture. Remington stamped their bayonets 1918 instead of1917. When Remington realized the error they began stamping the bayonets with 1917. Winchester 1917Bayonets are more valuable than Remington 1917,however Remington 1918 is more rare and valuable.This bayonet for sale is Winchester 1917 # 46 which is low.The Pattern 1907 Scabbard is marked withGF, General Fireproofing Co. of Youngstown ,Ohio and 923.This bayonet and scabbard are in very good condition.
