U.S. PRE-CIVIL WAR M-1840 CAVALRY SWORD BY \"HORSTMANN\"The 35.75\" smooth silverish brown patina blade has no rust or pitting, but a couple of minor dings on the bottom on the blade. The wire wrap is totally intact. The leather has some minor areas of cracking. The brass has a very old dark patina. The blade is stamped \"Horstmann & Sons - Philadelphia\". The scabbard has a very nice smooth silverish gray finish with some older darker age spots. There are no dents or dings in the scabbard. The drag is stamped \"A & E.H\". This is a very fine early Civil War era sword.

Upon further inspection, on the reverse side of the ricasso, there appears to be the stamping of a \"Crowned Knight\'s\" head which is the logo for the German firm of \"W.C.K.\". The majority of Horstmann\'s early blades were made in Germany. Please see additional pictures.
