UNIQUE(?) Collector\'s 19thC \"Baluch\" group TIMURI Camel-Hair Design Prayer Rug:
$99.00

RARE and Possibly Unique TIMURI-group Blue Ground Prayer Rug, West Afghanistan tribal, Herat region, 19th century, and coming in \"as found\" condition (please see all photos) The exact size is: 2\'-10\" x 5\'-5\" (86 x 165 cm). Wow, a \"killer\" Timuri-group prayer rug exhibiting allover repeat of large natural camel-hair stepped medallions with Turkmen-inspired \"chemche-gul\" centers (see close up photos 11 and 12) on an indigo blue field creating a fluid lattice grid to the eye that is carried into the mihrab and hand spandrals. Silk-like wool quality, together with a thin weave structure, gives this beautiful antique tribal textile relic a very soft and supple handle to it in the hand. Although showing one pencil-size bullet hole and three small areas showing wear down to the foundation in the field (see all close up photos), the weaving still retains its original natural brown horse or goat-hair side cord over-casting that are wrapped in a \"herring-bone\" braid technique rather than in the usual figure-8 fashion over two, three, or four warp bundles. For such an old example, it is amazing to find that both the top and the bottom endings still retain sizable remnants of the original weft-float brocaded end finish panels that skillfully echo the outer main pile border surround design. The dye lots used for this truly tribal prayer rug are all natural and derived from plant sources, or the colors are natural animal fibers; wool, camel-hair, and either horse-hair or goat-hair. There are three shades of brown that show varying degrees of oxidation. Note the intentional area of a green dye abrash about mid field. This is not a fade, bleed, or color run (see close up photo 9). Like most antique Timuri weaving, this example has a chameleon effect to the eye depending on the light source that hits it, as it changes color. Photos taken outside in the natural sunlight show honey-gold camel hair and the old time 19thC dye lot color palette quite well. As a token of appreciation to the weaver of this special prayer rug, I personally and gently hand washed it three times. It is immediately ready for a collection or for use as a magnificent tribal textile art wall hanging display.Ifyou have any questions about this lovely antique 19th century West Afghan tribal prayer rug, please feel free to email or call Michael Phillips Oriental Rugs. ADDENDUM:For those readers and students who may care about structure of antique tribal textile art, this authentic 19thC west Afghan tribal Timuri-group prayer rug is asymmetrically knotted open to the left with approximately 120 kspi on finely spun natural ivory wool warps that are on the same level, showing no degree of depression. The wefts are comprised of several shades of finely spun natural brown wool, two shoots between rows of knots.I spent 3 days going through an extensive antique oriental rug library and could not find a similarly designed published Timuri, or Baluch-group, prayer rug like this specimen in all of the rug book literature that I had at my disposal, possibly making it unique, if not, then still a quite a rare and beautiful find for the Baluch collector specialist or enthusiast.
A romantic note of interest is the casual observation that the three wear areas are consummate with the textile having been actually used as a prayer rug over a very long period of time as that is were the feet would curl, where the knees would hit, and where the head would touch. The rest of the weaving does not display wear areas as if it was used as a floor rug. This piece is fresh to me from the Orient. It came impacted with desert dust, but it was not dirty, per se. I hand washed the textile 3 times. I doubt if it was ever washed in it life, but it sure sparkles cleanly now.Use in the home or office as a decorative wall hanging illuminated by direct lighting.
