Carved by a highly skilled Kulani Prison inmate c. 1950
- An exquisitely detailed, ONE-OF-A-KIND vintage Kou Wood platter, hand-carved by a highly-skilled inmate at Kulani Prison on the Big Island of Hawaii, circa 1950.
- The first Kulani Prison work to be seen made of Kou Wood! Kou, or Cordia subcordata, was used in Ancient Hawaii to make ʻumeke (bowls), utensils, and ʻumeke lāʻau (large calabashes) because it did not impart a foul taste to food. The flowers were used to make lei, while a dye for kapa cloth and aho (fishing lines) was derived from the leaves.
- The design features the face of the Hawaiian volcano goddess Pele.
- Measurements: 35\" in length, 15\" wide.
- Condition:EXCELLENT. No major chips, scratches or scuffs present.
