Who knew that with a history full of tomahawks, axes, spears, war-hammers, harpoons, karambits and other weaponry United Cutlery\'snext step was to unveil a shovel? THE M48 KOMMANDO SURVIVAL SHOVEL is the latest – and possibly most unexpected – addition to the popular and highly sought after line of M48 survival/tactical tools and weapons from United Cutlery.

Like many of the pieces in the M48 line, the Kommando Survival Shovel has an ornate style to it – skull and lightning bolt emblem and all – looking almost like it belongs on display and not in use on the battlefield… but as we’ve learned in the past, the folks at United Cutlery know how to balance form and function and they do it exceedingly well.

Measuring 16.4 inches long from tip to tip, the M48 Kommando Survival Shovel might seem like it’s a little toyish at first, but once you get the 2.4 lb piece of 2Cr13 stainless tool steel out of the box and into your hand, it quickly becomes clear that this highly stylized spade is much more than a pretty piece of gear to place upon the shelf.

The handle – measuring just 9″ overall – doesn’t look like much of a handle at all, but the 30% fiberglass and nylon reinforced grip is perfect for use in small and open spaces alike. While you might not get the same leverage or benefit of mid-level distance from the M48 Kommando Survival Shovel that traditional shovels offer, the rounded cap, textured grip and light weight make it easy to use and manipulate no matter what you’re doing. The high-strength handle, combined with the reinforced and pointed structure of the blade provide the perfect platform for forced entry, removal of rubble and even scavenging missions… not to mention an easily controlled swing when used against the undead.

Carried/stored on the body or in a Bug Out Bag via the reinforced nylon sheath, the M48 Kommando Survival Shovel never has to leave your side until you want it to. The nylon sheath features two double-stitched belt loops (not MOLLE compatible), and two folding velcro tabs to lock the shovel in place. No matter how hard we tried, we couldn’t get the tabs to fail and let the shovel fall or fly free… and that’s a good thing for emergency response units and survivors on the move.

Designed to truly help individuals cope with many of the difficulties that arise when dealing with a disaster like a flood, hurricane, wild-fire, tornado and more, the M48 Kommando Survival Shovel is capable of making its way through doors, windows, walls and even the occasional cinder-block or two… not to mention all the other work it’s capable of – performing burials, digging fire-pits, fortifying locations, setting traps, dealing with waste, scavenging, performing rescues, bushwhacking and much more.
