US Army 9th Cavalry Buffalo Soldiers Canteen
M-1872 US Army 9th Cavalry (Famed Buffalo Soldiers) Canteen. The canteen is a standard M-1872, and is stenciled with crossed cavalry sabers, with the regiment number of \"9\" and company letter \"C\". The canteen shows moderate to heavy wear from use. The cork and chain are not present. This rare canteen was recently found \"out of the woods\" in Colorado. The overall condition is good.Canteen is in original condition and has not been re-sewn, altered or reconditioned in any way.Authenticated in person by two experts and shown to the historian at the Ft. Davis through photographs.
We tried to establish a soldier\'s name through the rack #53, but determined that it could have been used by more than one soldier.
As shown in the photos, the stitching is in very nice shape. The canteen is indented on both sides. We were told that sometimes the soldiers would purposely indent the canteens so they would ride more smoothly against the horse, but that was conjecture and rumor.
The neck ring is intact, but the chain is missing. Of course the cork disintegrated long ago.
The metal canteen underneath the wool/canvas cover is solid.Please feel free to ask any questions!
