When the United States entered WW1 in 1917, the first deadly air war in history had been raging over the Western Front for nearly three years. Some American pilots had flown in combat for the French as part of the \"Lafayette Escadrille\", and these hardened veterans formed the core of the fledgling US Army Air Service. Flying French made SPADs, the Americans soon proved themselves in swirling dogfights against the crack German Fokker pilots. Many Air Service pilots wore standard issue \"summer weight\" leather flight helmets in their open cockpit biplanes; most of those helmets had been procured by the government from sporting goods companies. This US Army Air Service WW1 PILOT SPALDING LEATHER FLIGHT HELMET is in good condition, with a small seam tear in the lower front right crown, the \"male\" and \"female\" snaps having torn away from the left crown and retention strap, respectively, a small hole in the middle front crown, a hole in the back right crown, moderate dark soiling to the crown and cheek flap linings, and with some overall drying, darkening, and age wear evident (ALL pictured). Otherwise, the helmet is in fine shape, with no other damage to the tough \"camel\" brown leather construction. Most interestingly, it boasts the classic front bill, 6 panel crown, and wool lined cheek flap, sports a fully functional wide leather chinstrap, and is complete with the original \"A.G. SPALDING BROS.\" maker\'s label inside. Itbears a chamois crown lining, features snap closure leather ear phone covers at each side, and carries various initials, names, and references to \"Mid-Channel\", \"Pearl Harbor\", and the early 1920s lightly hand marked in black around the exterior.A fine example of a very rare, originalUS Army Air Service WW1 PILOT SPALDING LEATHER FLIGHT HELMET.Now celebrating over 15 years on . offer with confidence and please view our other great military and aviation classics, includinga very rare, originalUS Army USMC Marine WW2 PACIFIC BEN ROCKLIN \"STICKER\" FIGHTING KNIFE in good condition, featuring a gleaming, bright polished 7 5/8\" spearpoint double edge dagger blade, and sporting the classic Rocklin lathe turned hardwood handle.
