Every American coastal city lived under the nightmare that a foreign man o\' war might slip into its harbor, level its guns, and demand the capitulation of the city. The US Coastal Artillery Corps (CAC) was formed in 1901 to protect American cities, harbors, and military installations from seaborne attack using heavy cannons in well protected emplacements. CAC 1st class gunners wore a distinctive cannon shell chevron on the sleeves of their M-1902 dress blue uniforms to denote their qualification. This US Army Pre-WW1 COAST ARTILLERY 1ST CLASS GUNNER M-1902 DRESS BLUE CHEVRON is in excellent condition, with a small spot of mothing at the upper left front and back, some scattered spot mothing at the middle and right back, and with some light scattered age wear evident (ALL pictured). Otherwise, the chevron is in excellent shape, with no other damage to the crisp dark blue wool construction.
